Is Your Home Router Safe?
Last week Cisco’s Talos security division released an extensive blog post informing the public of a widespread infection in low end routers, usually used for home and small offices. It is called VPNFilter. Business routers with active subscriptions (such as a Sonicwall router) are not affected. Thousands of lower end business and consumer devices with no intrusion protection system (IPS)/anti-virus/malware protection are the devices that have been compromised. According to the report published by Cisco the known devices affected are Linksys, Mikro Tik, NETGEAR, TP-Link, and even QNAP’s network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Sudora advises to power cycle your router when you get home today and to upgrade your router’s firmware as soon as possible. On May 25th, 2018 the FBI released this Public Service Announcement that stated “Foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide. The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office and home office routers. The malware is able to perform multiple functions, including possible information collection, device exploitation, and blocking network traffic.”
