How fast is the connection?
512 Kbps symmetrical – meaning you can send data upstream at 512 kbps and receive data downstream at 512 kbps
How does that speed compare to dial-up, cable, and DSL?
On the downstream side it’s much faster than dial-up, and comparable to most basic DSL and Cable high-speed Internet packages.
On the upstream side it’s 3 times faster than most DSL and Cable high-speed Internet packages.
Do I need a land phone line?
No landline required.
How much does service cost?
$10 per month for the first 3 months (this is to help offset hardware and installation cost)
then
$36.95 per month – No contract necessary. Cancel anytime.
Can I hook this up to multiple computers in my apartment?
Yes with a router. It works similar to AOL where each subscriber has a login and password. If you are logged in on one computer, you cannot log in on another computer. With a router, multiple computers can be online using the same login.
Will I need to purchase additional hardware?
Yes you will. A lot will depend on your location within the complex, and whether you have multiple computers.
Hardware cost for a wired computer (i.e. a desktop PC): $87.50 for a Wall Mount Adapter
NOTE: Residents in select units will not be using the above equipment. Those units may require a wireless ethernet bridge (also $87.50). Call (314) 991-2594 for more information.
Will I need to purchase additional software?
You should have anti-virus software if you don't already.
Can I just use my existing cable modem, DSL modem?
No. You need special hardware. However, if you have a standard router you can use that in conjuntion with the other hardware.
Can I still use my current email?
Yes – for all web-based email (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail) not associated with your current Internet service provider.
What are the minimum system requirements?
Wireless customers need a wireless card (802.11b/g) in their laptop. Wired customers need an Ethernet port (a.k.a. the plug that looks like a big phone jack).
Is this compatible with Macintosh or Linux?
Yes, any computer with modern web browsing capabilities will work.
Do you offer static IP addresses?
No.
Can I use remote administration software (like PC anywhere) to access my home computer from work?
No.
Can I use my VPN or remote administration software to access outside computers/networks from my apartment? All outbound connections for services such as school or business VPN will work.
Can I still use my firewall?
Software firewalls (e.g. ZoneAlarm, Norton) are fine. A router can act as a firewall for additional security.
