Windows Messenger
Service is a Windows "feature" that allows other
computers to create a pop-up with a message on your screen. These
messenger popups look like other standard Windows messages or errors and
the can cause you to accidentally install spyware, like Gator or Gain
(software that sends personal information to its makers) or create other
security holes in your system. They are annoying, and are
increasingly being used as a new type of spam advertising. Users of AOL,
AOL Instant Messenger, and other instant messaging services are the
biggest targets.
Fortunately, Windows
Messenger Service popups are very easy to stop.
Unfortunately, they are allowed by default in Windows OS's.
* Note - This will not stop popup ads from Internet Explorer or
other browser Windows, only a Windows Messenger type of popup. To stop
browser window popups, you need an Internet browser that has this as a
feature, like Mozilla
(this is a free, EXCELLENT alternative to Internet Explorer on Windows,
Mac, and Linux) or a third party program that gives the feature Internet
Explorer. To disable popups in Mozilla go to Edit / Preferences, then
choose Privacy & Security / Popup Windows and check the Block
Unrequested Popup box.
* Note - To protect yourself from spyware and
other harmful programs, download and install Spybot
Search & Destroy. It is a FREE program that fully works and
contains no advertising!!! It is rated by CNet and ZD-net as the best
program of its kind. If you use this program on a regular basis, we ask
that you contribute donations to its author in order to keep this this
program free and to help the programmers that are graciously protecting
you. Thank you.
